Black-and-yellow rockfish at Yellow Pinnacle, just off Yellowbanks, at the southeast corner of Santa Cruz Island. This fellow was not happy to see a diver in his territory. He cruised back and forth in front of me a few times, then turned and confronted me head-on.
Milton Love suggests that the Gopher rockfish and Black-and-yellow rockfish might be the same species, despite some differences in coloration and usual habitat. I can't tell in this black-and-white image.
