Sea lions seem to be particularly playful in winter. These appeared periodically behind the boat at the anchorage at Santa Barbara Island, to check out activity on deck. They (or their friends) often mobbed us underwater, forming a roiling mass so that a diver would see nothing but sea lions, in every direction. Then, they would suddenly vanish, tearing off in some new direction.
